Blog #3
Hi everyone welcome back to my blog, thanks for taking your
time to watch my video about Mrs. Galvan. She has only been a teacher for about
2 years so it was great to see what she thought about only being a teacher for
a short amount of time. I asked Mrs. Galvan a couple of question and I like how she said that she likes to create a safe environment for her english language learners. She said that she wants them to feel like it's okay to make mistakes. According to Ortega she mentions how social support from significant others (including parents, siblings, peers and teachers) boosts motivation in learning a new language (Ortega, pg. 172). Since Mrs. Galvan is creating that safe environment for her learners, students will have a confident boost. I also like how Mrs. Galvan mentions that since she had been a english language learner, she understands her students struggles. Which I think is very important because as a teacher, since you are able to understand your students on that level you can help them even more.

Hi Elyse Ramos, it’s nice to meet you. You did a nice job with your interview, however it would have been nice to see your teacher as well. It’s also kind of hard to hear clearly with all the wind. Your teacher seems to know what she is doing despite being a new teacher. My teacher also talked about how the kids struggled with vocabulary, reading, and writing. It can be difficult for ESL students to understand English if they are newly exposed to it. However with time, patience, and practice these students can get better and improve. Students tend to learn better and faster when they are motivated. When Ortega discusses about how students have intrinsic motivation when they begin to want to learn simply for the sake of learning, that is the way for teachers to motivate their students though fun, and culturally interesting lessons (2013, pg. 176). Hopefully your teacher will find such ways to motivate them as well.

Hey Elyse,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed watching you video and reading your post. I am encouraged by Mrs. Galvan because of the amount of experience that she has and how much she has already taken away from this profession. I totally agree that a safe environment is needed for students and that it will boost their confidence. I also feel like this will create opportunities for the students to create their own learning styles and strategies. It has been stated that, “If styles are preferred ways of processing information, strategies are conscious mental and behavioural procedures that people engage in with the aim to gain control over their learning process. (Ortega, p. 208, 2013).” So if this is able to occur in the minds of students, I feel like creating an environment that allows that is a huge plus.

Hi Eboni! I agree wit both of you as well on the safe environment. It made me think of kids learning how to walk. I order for a parent to trust the child is ready to be left alone they must need to be there and make sure is is safe. In the classroom that is why you must teach and then give guide practice, and finally independent practice comes last. However with n ELL, t is sightly different. According to Ortega in contrast, most learners may benefit from external help via explanations and guided practice, provided these are well designed (Ortega, 2013, 160). This means that our guided practice must be a little bit extra and more enforced as well as structured.

You make an excellent point. Some students, especially ELLs, need more external help than others. I was one of those students. Guided practice was my go-to when it came to learning. According to Ortega “
ReplyDeleteMental activity is always mediated by tools, physical and symbolic; through the use of tools humans can change their reality, but the use of tools also changes them.” I used guided practice as my tool to understand more of what was being taught. Because of that, I applied it to my prior knowledge leaving me to simply apply it to my reality.
